St. Francis Prep scored seven in the first inning to beat Stepinac 8-4 in the first round of CHSAA intersectional playoffs.
The seeds have held up, but that doesn’t mean Friday’s sectional semifinals will necessarily be predictable — at least some of them.

I talked about three games today: Brewster dealing North Rockland its first loss; Iona Prep beating another established and successful Section 1 program in Somers; and John Jay winning another big non-section test by beating 2007 Class C state finalist Corning East.
North Rockland, the defending Class AA champion, beat Somers, the defending A champion, 11-5.
Tappan Zee center fielder Brittni Alexander had a walkoff home run to left field to give the Dutchies a 2-1 win in eight innings over the North Rockland Red Raiders.
Dan Blumberg shot a 2-under-par 34 to lead Brewster to a 217-221 over Harrison at Westchester Country Club today. Here are my thoughts from the match:

It was a rough day for the ‘Huskers, who played the No. 16-ranked team in the nation and lost 9-1.
Stepinac came from a run down to beat Iona Prep 2-1 in extra innings this afternoon. Here are my thoughts on what was a truly great game between rivals:
Luke Giumarro completed an unbelievable turn of Mahopac’s rotation with a four-hitter in Mahopac’s 10-2 win over Mount Vernon, the highest-scoring team in the section.
Yorktown downed the No. 9-ranked team in the nation Chaminade 10-6 today and John Jay handled Somers 15-5 in a meeting of the teams that met last year in the Class B sectional final.

Luis Vasquez’s two-hitter trumped Josh Pollack’s 5.1 innings of no-hit ball as East Ramapo ended its slide.
In a league III matchup, the Pirates put on an offensive clinic racking up 18 hits en route to a 12-2 win over the Tigers.
North Rockland, the reigning Class AA champs, played their first game today. Ryan Fasano pitched brilliantly in a 1-0, eight inning win over Clarkstown South.
Mamaroneck beat Clarkstown North today, 4-3. This was the Tigers’ first game since a shocking upset in the first round of sectionals.
The Garnets beat the Indians 17-11 to earn their first win of the season.

Today I was at the parade in Briarcliff for the girls basketball team. The Bears won both the state and federation championships in Class B, becoming the first Westchester girls basketball team to win a federation title since Ursuline in 1994. Here are my thoughts from the festivities:

Yonkers High School sophomore Keith Goldberg came in fourth place in the all-section competition at the state championship meet in White Plains.

Section 1 defeated Section 3 186.175-182.675 to three-peat at the NYSPHSAA Gymnastics Championships. Kylie Shields won the vault, balance beam and floor exercise titles. Danielle Bonner won the uneven bars title. Shields also set a new record on the vault and the team set a new record on the beam.

Tuckahoe eliminated defending Class C champion Hamilton, 67-42 in a Section 1 Class C first-round game.
Hey, I was at one of tonight’s Class C quarterfinal games – No. 6 Keio vs. No. 3 Tuckahoe. It was a 50-23 Tigers victory.
The Tigers face defending Section 1 champions No. 2 Blind Brook next week at the County Center in the semifinals.
No. 3 Pearl River held on at home to defeat No. 11 Pelham, 37-31 in a Class A quarterfinal. The Pirates will now move on to face No. 2 Port Chester at the County Center. Here are my thoughts from this game:

Joe Lombardi had 24 points, 14 rebounds, six assists and three blocks as Briarcliff beat Lincoln Hall in a Class B sectional quarterfinal.
No. 6 Pearl River defeated No. 3 Tappan Zee 71-44 in the Class A quarterfinals at Tappan Zee High School. The Pirates will face Spring Valley next week at the County Center in the Class A semifinals
