Today I was at Greenburgh’s A.F. Veteran Park for the Section 1 tennis finals. Here’s my take on how everything went down.
Kevin Devaney Jr. joined me just moments ago for a special Halloween edition of the Varsity Insider Podcast. We take a look back and ahead at the big playoff games leading into our “Varsity Central Playoff Extra” show that will air tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. on RNN. That’s Channel 19 and 6 in Westchester, Channel 19 in Rockland, Channel 20 in Putnam and Channel 62 on DirectTV.
Ossining beat Somers, 11-9, in tonight’s Class A football semifinal.
Here’s what you need to know for Saturday’s Class AA football semifinal.

Here’s my take on Byram Hills-Tappan Zee as well as Monday’s full slate of quarterfinals.
The Red Raiders defeated Carmel 33-14 on Sunday in a Class AA quarterfinal. Remember my videocast from Week 1? If not, here’s a recap: I was right.

Fox Lane’s ability to mix the run with its potent passing attack was the key as it beat Beacon 21-12 to advance to the Class A semifinals Tuesday against unbeaten Eastchester.
Here’s more:
Ossining ended Harrison’s two-year reign as Class A sectional champs with a win in tonight’s quarterfinal at Feeley Field.
Somers handled a tough Nyack team in the Class A quarterfinals, and now get its rematch with Ossining. Here’s the details.

I was over at Eastchester today where Section 1’s new team of destiny beat Lakeland 39-7 in an impressive performance.
Liam Byrne had 129 yards rushing and three touchdowns and Chris Perugini had 95 yards rushing and two scores.

I joined Kevin Devaney Jr. today for a special playoff edition of the Varsity Insider weekly HS football podcast. We take a look at all of this week’s Section 1 playoff games as well as the latest from the CHSFL.
When you say Carmel-Mahopac, you’ve said it all.
In a nutshell, it’s the North version of Rye vs. Harrison.
But this year’s meeting was even bigger than ever with a playoff bid on the line.
And it was Carmel which pulled it out 19-12 to win the Bryan Higgins Memorial Trophy for the ninth time in the last 10 years.
Here’s my report:
It may have been the Tuskers’ biggest win since 2003 when they ended the regular season with a 6-0 win at Harrison to earn a playoff bid.
Here’s more on last night’s game, which earned the Tuskers sole possession of the League A-A title and a No. 1 seed in the Class A playoff which start next Thursday.
Trivia question: Name the only Section 1 boys lacrosse program other than Yorktown to win a state title?
Answer: Mahopac in 1996.
And one of the stars of that team  Mike Haddeland  has been named the Indians’ new varsity coach. His younger brother, Dave, who also starred on the ‘96 squad, will serve as his assistant.

The Red Raiders continued their five-year unbeaten streak over the rest of Rockland County football, but only by one point. Here’s my impression of the game.

The teams, who are now in the same league, met for the first time since last year’s Class AA sectional semifinal meeting. Here’s a report:
I went to two games today: New Rochelle’s 24-0 win over Gorton and Stepinac’s 45-7 rout of Cardinal Hayes. Check out my video blog for some insight:
Iona Prep stormed out to a 28-6 lead at halftime and overcame a tough third quarter to win today. Gaels QB Ryan O’Neil was terrific, 22 for 33 for 315 yards and two TDs in one of the best passing performances I’ve ever seen.
For more on O’Neil and co., plus a word or two about Mount, check out the video…
Rye beat Pelham 28-7 on Saturday in a rematch of the Class B championship. On Friday night Valhalla pulled out a late 18-12 win at Albertus.
It sure looks that way. Here’s more:
Fox Lane defeated Ossining, the top-ranked team in The Journal News Class A poll, tonight by a shocking 35-6 margin at home tonight. Mike Mathews threw two touchdowns and ran in another. And Matt Newkirt and Dorian Dorsey each had caught touchdowns and returned defensive scores as Fox Lane forced seven turnovers. Wild game. Hear about it below:
Not much to say about this one, as Pleasantville rolled over Dover behind two receiving touchdowns by Danny Bramswig and two blocked punts by Anthony Candela. The Panthers are very good and probably won’t get an opportunity to prove just how good until the Class B semis.
North Rockland beat Suffern 5-1 yesterday. That’s nothing new. What was interesting was what North Rockland coach Steve Shepardson told me after the game.
