Today I went to the latest installment of the Mount Vernon-New Rochelle rivalry. The game was at Mount Vernon and the Knights wound up with a convincing 88-66 win behind 30 points and five assists from junior Sherrod Wright. Here are my thoughts from the game:

Lakeland loses perfect record but wins…Here’s my report.
Today I witnessed Horace Greeley easily defeat Suffern, the defending Section 1 champs, 112.5-73.5. The win wrapped up an undefeated regular season for the Quakers, who will now enter the postseason as the favorites. Here are my thoughts from the meet:
Tappan Zee won the meet 184.50-177.65 over Clarkstown and in the process set a new Section 1 team record. The Dutchies also broke their own Section 1 floor exercise record with a 48.2.

Albertus Magnus handled Nanuet easily in the championship of the Nanuet tournament. Here’s my take on how that happened, plus the implications of the victory.
Fordham Prep won its eighth game in a row, 7-4 over Scarsdale in the championship game. Pelham beat Bethlehem 3-2 in overtime in the consolation game. Here is my recap of an exciting day at the Hutchinson Ice Arena.
Led by the Mark Hoempler who was named the most outstanding swimmer for four first-place finishes in the four events he raced in, Suffern easily won the County title.
I was at the 32nd annual Croton Invitational wrestling tournament today to see an impressive Sleepy Hollow performance. Seven Headless Horsemen made the finals and six took home titles. Sleepy Hollow took the team title with 225 points.
I just returned from Eastchester’s 68-64 win over Tuckahoe at Eastchester. Both teams had some pretty impressive individual scoring performances. Eastchester’s Mickey Abbatiello scored 30 points for the Eagles including his 1,000th point. Tuckahoe’s Robert Johnson scored a game-high 43 points. Here are my thoughts on the game:
John Jay had six first-period pins in a 66-12 victory over North Rockland. Henry Stauber (17 seconds) and C.J. Upham (27 seconds) had the quickest pins.
Panthers open lead against Hen Hud behind Cestone’s 656…Here’ my review of today bowling matches at Cortlandt Lanes.
Irvington needed a League III-C win today and it got it. Lisa Bucci had 17 points and seven assists to lead the Bulldogs. Kelly Mulligan had 22 points for Pearl River.

In a battle of Nos. 1 vs. 2, Mount Vernon downed Ursuline 57-48 tonight. Kwinnyata Mercer and Nadia Duncan combined for 41 points.

The Bears, who were down by 12 with four minutes left in the third quarter, came back to pull out a 78-69 win.

I just finished my story on the Mahopac vs. Lakeland/Panas gymnastics meet which was a very close meet and a good measuring stick for the Rebels. The Indians went onto win the meet 169.15-166.55 but all in all; it was a good meet for the Rebels.

On a day in which the court at Peekskill High School was named in his honor, 25th-year Peekskill coach Lou Panzanaro guided the Red Devils to a 53-37 win over St. Anthony’s (6-4).
Mookie Jones led Peekskill (10-0) with 19 points, six rebounds and seven blocks. Junior Darien Thomas chipped in 12 points and nine rebounds.
The Red Devils suffered injuries to two of their starters. Senior captain Elliot Wastson went down with a left ankle injury and sophomore point guard Daquan Brickhouse sustained a right ankle injury.
From the first opening minute, you could tell that the Friars were overmatched both in talent, depth and athleticism.
I was in Chappaqua tonight where Scarsdale handed Horace Greeley its first Section 1 loss of the season, 46-39.
