I talked about three games today: Brewster dealing North Rockland its first loss; Iona Prep beating another established and successful Section 1 program in Somers; and John Jay winning another big non-section test by beating 2007 Class C state finalist Corning East.

Yorktown downed the No. 9-ranked team in the nation Chaminade 10-6 today and John Jay handled Somers 15-5 in a meeting of the teams that met last year in the Class B sectional final.

Happy New Year, everybody.

ThereÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s no doubt that 2007 was an eventful year in local sports in the Lower Hudson Valley.

It included the Empire State Games coming to Westchester for the first time in the eventÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s 30-year history as well as plenty of other memorable moments.

Football: New Rochelle refuels against John Jay

Football: Balanced Fox Lane beats Beacon

Football: Carmel clinches playoff berth by beating Mahopac

When you say Carmel-Mahopac, you’ve said it all.

In a nutshell, it’s the North version of Rye vs. Harrison.

But this year’s meeting was even bigger than ever with a playoff bid on the line.

And it was Carmel which pulled it out 19-12 to win the Bryan Higgins Memorial TrophyÃ‚Â for the ninth time in the last 10 years.

Football: Somers shuts out Fox Lane 15-0

It may have been the TuskersÃ¢â‚¬â„¢ biggest win since 2003 when they ended the regular season with a 6-0 win at Harrison to earn a playoff bid.

HereÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s moreÃ‚Â on last nightÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s game, which earned the Tuskers sole possession of the League A-A title and a No. 1 seed in the Class A playoff which start next Thursday.

Boys lacrosse: Mahopac names a new coach

Trivia question: Name the only Section 1 boys lacrosse program other than Yorktown to win a state title?

Answer: Mahopac in 1996.

And one of the stars of that team Ã¢â‚¬â€ Mike Haddeland Ã¢â‚¬â€ has been named the Indians’ new varsity coach. His younger brother, Dave, who also starred on the ‘96 squad, will serve as his assistant.

Boys lacrosse: Yorktown star bound for Albany

It was a groundbreaking season for the University at Albany men’s lacrosse team this past spring. The Great Danes won a school-record 15 games, rose to as high as No. 2 during the regular season in the Division I rankings and beat eventual national champion Johns Hopkins and national semifinalist Delaware during the regular season. And Scott Marr, a 1987 Yorktown graduate, was named Division I coach of the year.

Yorktown senior midfielder Rocky Bonitatibus was among those who noticed all this. His oral commitment to accept a scholarship offer from Albany makes him the first ‘Husker to commit to a D-I program in two years.

Football: Ossining edges Somers in 14-13 thriller

For the second year in a row, the Ossining and Somers football teams were involved in a dramatic, down-to-the-wire thriller.

And for the second straight year, Ossining pulled out the win Ã¢â‚¬â€ this time on a 71-yard touchdown pass from Justin Kreamer to Jesse Drinks with 1:50 remaining, followed by Drinks’ game-winning extra point as Ossining won 14-13.

Hey gang –
We have some more offseason boys lacrosse news. One of the most successful programs in the section, Somers, has hired a new coach and reshuffled its entire coaching staff at the same time.

John DeVito, an assistant at Somers the last three years and who spearheaded the drive to start varsity lax at Somers 14 years ago, has switched roles with Tim Schurr.

Football: Is Scarsdale back?

It sure looks that way.

The Raiders picked up a big upset today by winning at Horace Greeley 28-21 today.

To put it in perspective, Scarsdale is not only coming off a 4-5 season in which it lost to the Quakers 30-0, but has not made a bowl appearance since 1990. Since that time, Greeley has made 10 bowl appearances, including four trips to the sectional finals.

I have some thoughts on that big win as well as SomersÃ¢â‚¬â„¢ 27-12 season-opening victory last night against Brewster.
